horse training question/ throwing head?

December 11th, 2009
Jen33 asked:

I am training my 3 year old paint gelding. He has just started out and I am finally at the point where he SOMEWHAT knows what to do. He goes just fine. Stopping is sort of a chore, but we are working on that. When turning he sometimes throws his head around to protest. I dont want this to become a habit. Is this okay and is he just doing this because he is just getting used to everything, or could this become a problem? I do not want to use a tie down, so please do not state that as an option because that will not help when training. Thanks everyone
I do not want to use a martingale…it is pretty much the same as a tie down… I would like to figure out some sort of technique
I’m using a broken bit and not pulling to hard…it just seems as if he is being stubborn (which he always is, even on the ground…but he is getting better)
he’s completely fine with stopping…he’s completely fine briddling him up and taking it off…and he does do turns….it just seems like sometimes he does this when he wants to go a different way or is getting annoyed
he has a pretty low set head… and I would perfer not to use a hackamore since he is just getting broke and he takes the bit just fine

I just got another horse, her name is Lacy. At her old home, she was riden 14 years ago, never again after. She’s greenbroke, and i wanted her for my mom to ride. But she needs some more experience. I need a helpfull website that could give me tips and lessons on training her again. Just the basic stuff too, nothing too fancy, just walking and turning, troting and loping is all i need for now, once i get those acomplished i’ll find something for her but until that point what do I do?

What is the term for riding a horse and leading another horse next to you?

I can’t remember the word for leading an unsaddled, brideled horse next to a riding horse for training and exercise. It’s not lungeing, I know what that is. I want to say trotting but I think that’s wrong. Could someone un-jog my memory? Thanks,

Horse Training Problems./Riding Issues?

November 30th, 2009
galloping_beauty456 asked:

i have a 9 year old Morab who hasn’t been worked very much over the past year and a half because of bad habits and disrespect.

this has put an halt to our riding. i asked her to canter while lunging and she bucked and bolted right at the cue. (is this normal?)

a problem i often have while lunging her is she gets very close to me while i’m standing in the middle. and she used to only do this at a walk but now at a trot she is making small circles around me. i want her to fill the round pen and ride on the fence. she never does.
how can i get her to get out of my space and onto the rail?

she also is very disrespectful when it comes to hoof picking. she won’t pick up her foot and always puts up a fight. when i get to her hind she usually kicks….

and in the saddle:

she is distracted and always is paying attention to the other horses who are grazing or in their paddocks. she always wants to ride the side closest to them. how can i get her to be more focused?

side note: i also would love to take her on some trail rides but how she’s acting in the ring, on the ground, and in the round pen i’m afraid that that would be a mistake. whats a good way to introduce a horse to trails who has problems such as my mare’s?

thank you for your two cents and advice. i will take everything into consideration to how to fix her problems.
